London's anguish, London's pride
This paper is proud to have more Asian readers than any other. We believe the vast majority of Muslims are decent, lawabiding people who make an immense contribution to this country.

And let it never be forgotten that Muslims were victims of this terrible evil too. Those who try to create racial discord over this tragedy are beneath contempt.

But this doesn't get away from the fact that while most Islamic leaders are fierce in their condemnation of these atrocities, it is sadly apparent that a small minority of their co-religionists have become militant fanatics, under the influence of extremist clerics,

Shouldn't police, the wider Muslim community and the rest of us be mature enough to face the uncomfortable implications? The truth is, our whole society needs to examine its priorities.

Can we continue with an immigration system so shambolic that we have no idea who is entering or leaving the country? Can we continue to tolerate those who proclaim hatred of Britain and its values?

And what about the Human Rights legislation used to free suspects held in Belmarsh under the Government's anti-terror laws? At the time, Lord Hoffman loftily declared that the real threat to the nation came not from terrorism "but from laws such as these". Does he think so still?

Opinion

Where is the Gandhi of Islam?
By Charles Moore
Then Mr Livingstone said: "This is not an ideology or even a perverted faith." Why did he want to say that? How - if, as the authorities tell us, the attacks were carried out by Islamist extremists - could this be true?

The main spokesman for the Metropolitan Police on Thursday was Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Paddick. He also complained about attacks on "purely innocent members of the public", thereby making one think that there might be other people (police? soldiers? politicians?), who are not purely innocent and should have been attacked instead. Asked about the nature of the terrorists, Mr Paddick said: "Islam and terrorism don't go together."

It is true that the vast majority of Muslims are not terrorists, or involved in terrorism, and this needs to be said strongly if people assert otherwise. But if the Metropolitan Police really believe what Brian Paddick says, if they really, truly think that the words "Islam" and "terrorism" must not be linked, then we have little hope of catching the killers, of understanding how the terrorism works, or of preventing new atrocities.

When a nation, a race, a political movement, a group of workers, the followers of a religion have legitimate grievances, there generally arises amongst them a champion who can command respect for his advocacy of peace, his willingness to fight without weapons and to win by moral authority. There may be many such grievances for Muslims in Britain, and in the West, but we are still waiting for the Gandhi or the Martin Luther King to give them the right voice.

Why is not more stigma attached to the Muslims who are murdering other Muslims every day in Iraq and the Middle East?

Why is not more stigma attached to the British (as well as Americans) who are murdering other nations every day in Iraq and elsewhere in the rest of world.

Good security depends on sound intelligence
Many in Britain's Muslim community are feeling exposed today. Their worst fears will be realised if the attacks are al-Qa'ida linked with some British extremist involvement. A recent report by the Home Affairs Select Committee highlighted how international terrorism and the response to it had affected community relations in the UK. The British Muslim community is in an unenviable position. Much vilified in the popular press, and often irrationally feared by some otherwise "good liberals", mainstream Muslims have often been left without much support in their daily efforts to resist the extreme views propagated by a tiny minority. Yet their efforts are critical to effective counter-terrorism.

In a similar vein, the Government should press ahead with existing measures, including its ID card scheme, but it should resist the temptation to sweep all constructive criticism aside in the wake of the bombing. The scheme can be improved and the right changes will make it more likely it can help in the fight against a repeat of Thursday.

 BBC「Mayor condemns 'cowardly' attack 」(2005
He said: "Black and white, Muslim and Christian, Hindus and Jews, young and old. It was an indiscriminate attempt to slaughter, irrespective of any considerations for age, class, religion whatever."
 これを読んだ当初は、読む記事の大半の中で”罪の無い普通の人たちに対するテロ攻撃”以上の対立関係がなく、「アメリカの同時テロのときと違って変に政治に利用されたりせずにすむかも。慎重になってるだけかもしれんけどなぁ…」なんて思ってたら、それは、どうやら、BBCとガーディアンしか読んでなかったかららしい(^ ^;
